No, not another blog chain post. The post title is just relevant. I’ve officially released the site that’s hosting my online serial, Dawn, which can be found by going here–http://dawncreation.wordpress.com.
If you’re still unfamiliar with what a web serial actually is and haven’t visited any of the excellent stories listed on the Serial page in the sidebar, then I think you’re missing out. A web serial is usually an ongoing novel posted on the internet, usually on a blog, for people to read for free. It’s providing your written work to the public directly without any agents or publishers, printers or any middlemen really. They’re more closely centered in niche markets and they’re still relatively small in numbers compared to something like a web comic but with all of the media products surrounding downloadable books and such, it really isn’t much of a surprise that novels are going by the way of blogs. Think of it more in terms of traditional serials found in newspapers and magazines when they were still interested in the literary. Same concept except applied to the internet.
Now this isn’t to say I’m not going to continue to pursue traditional publication. Are you kidding? I’m whipping up WIPs as we speak. It’s just with this story, I felt the web novel or web serial was the perfect arena for it. Or at least that’s how it grew in my mind. You know, as a writer, you have stories that you never intended to send out for publication but you’d still like people to read them. That’s what I’m doing here. I already provide access to some of my short stories on this blog (see the sidebar) so why not a novel? And if you think this is going to take up all of my writing time, fret not. I’ve got it all planned out. There’s a reason why I’m only posting twice a month. Plenty of time for other writing, not to mention serial chapter editing as well.
So what’s the story about? Vampires. Historical vampires that have nothing to do with Vlad the Impaler. This is my own vampire creation story set in ancient Egypt. Why not? Vlad’s overdone and, quite frankly, it’s gotten a little boring. So I’m throwing in some time, sand and sun in order to spice things up. I’m not going to be holding anything back in this story so I would recommend it for maturer audiences, perhaps 16 and up but you know what? If a younger kid stumbles upon it and starts reading it, then I blame it on the parents. They should be watching what their children are getting into on the intarweb and not expecting other people do their work for them. So know that it contains adult content, however you want to define that but the site itself carries no explicit warning about it. But you’d think people would make the connection of vampires with violence and sex. But then again you’d expect people to know that they’re getting hot coffee without it being printed on the cup. Oh well.
So if you’re interested in ancient Egypt or in vampires or both, come take a read. The first chapters go up next Sunday and the regular posting schedule follows. Looking forward to seeing you at Dawn!
