Something is ultimately lost when one's writing goal is only to make a lot of money. It would be nice though to have your talent recognized. And yet it all comes down to luck too. If you're in a place at the right time with a product, story, or idea everybody wants, well, it's going to pay off. As for me, I'm more likely to have a great white shark fall on me while I'm hiking across the floor of Death Valley during the hottest time of the year than winning any kind of lottery or getting a mega-publishing deal.
