So I’ve been working through another read-through of edits on Earth Shatterer, mainly just working on rewording as opposed to rewriting. Slowly but surely I’ve been getting through it and just now I cranked through the final few chapters I had left, mainly because there was little I really wanted to edit. All of that heavy stuff is at the beginning. Again, to reinforce that I’m done rewriting. I’ve just reworded some stuff so my work sounds a little better, the characters more believable and it’s overall a little more padded because I cut out quite a bit in the last run-through.
Something that I’ve known since my very first edit, my MC, Michael, has a tendency not only to vomit/get nauseus quite a big, but takes quite a few hits to the head and/or blacks out. Poor Michael. These are all actually interrelated but my main concern is the blacking out.
Whenever I’ve talked about it amongst other writers or read about it in places with writing tips, I’ve always read that having a character go unconscious is just an easy out to get him from one point to another without having to do the work to actually get him there. Looking back, yes, my character loses consciousness but nothing happens in the black out phase.
I think he blacks out twice. The first time when he’s kidnapped from Market by the Yehls. They, for lack of better words, chloroform him. From the time he blacks out, all that happens is they drag him out of the town and into a carriage. The second time is after a sparring session where, for all intents and purposes, he gets the shit beaten out of him and blacks out. All that happens between the time he blacks out and wakes up is he’s put to bed and his wounds tended to. I figure since I’m not having him black out during integral action and waking up okay and normal and have everything explained to him, I’m kind of out of the range of fire. What do you think? Am I okay?
Other than that, I just have to type in the changes, run it through spell check and read it through one last time to make sure I didn’t miss any errors in typing. And then it’s done. Holy crap it’s done. I’m like a week away from finishing it (depending on how long it’ll take me to type in everything). That scares the shit out of me. It means I could have this thing out on query by the time I have my tattoo finished on the 17th.
Did I forget to mention I got another tattoo? I’ll make a post about that later in the week. But yeah, got a new one. Have to go back to get it finished.
Can someone tell me if querying gets easier? Like, it’s not uncommon for writers to have to query multiple manuscripts before landing an agent but the more you send out, is it the less you worry? Or does it last the entire time? I’m just so freaking nervous.
When I have my changes typed in and it’s been spell-checked, I’m going to post my original first chapter and my new first chapter so everyone can see the transformation it’s made. Personally, I think it’s pretty huge but I’d like for you guys (all 6 of you ;p) to see it. I enjoy sharing my work and I’ve wanted to share this new and improved chapter for quite some time but I wanted to get it good first and get everything edited. Almost time!
Ugh. My heart beats faster every time I think about querying. I really am that close. Eep!
