Yeah, I Caved

I said I’d never do it.  Why would I?  I could barely think of anything to update my Facebook status thing with.  What the hell use would I have with a Twitter account?  Not to mention I’d only be able to access it like once a day.  Kind of defeats the purpose.

But then I found out you can text in twits.  And I upgraded my text plan early last month.  The stars were beginning to line up.

So I signed up.  And I update a few times a day.  Usually with snarky commentary on stuff that happens to me throughout the day.  Hey, whatever works.

Mainly it’s a tool to connect with fellow book bloggers.  A lot of them have Twitter accounts.  Not that I felt left out.  I just didn’t feel the need.  But after BEA, I wanted to get myself out there a little more.  Twitting was the way to do that.

I also created a Facebook page for my book blog.  Yeah, for exposure.  Why not?  Whatever works.

You can Like Bites on Facebook and/or follow me on Twitter at @donnaatbites.

I’m also posting a little bit of my writing stuff on Twitter as well.  Like today when I was bored at work and working on Diamond Crier, I twitted about an awesome concept I came up with about family hearts.  I like sharing stuff like that.  In 140 characters or less.

Ban This!

Be sure to head on over to my book blog, Bites, during the month of September for Ban This!  Book Bloggers for Book Smarts.  Not only will I be posting a bunch of banned and challenged book-related fun (plus I’m currently having a Ban This! contest and will have another one mid-month), but all the lovely blogs on my list of Ban This! blogs will be doing the same thing.

Banned Books Week is from September 26th to October 3rd this year but I wanted to expand that fun for the entire month.  So stop on by and join in!  Because you know ranking on teh stoopid is fun!

BBAW Nods? Holy Crap!

So BBAW stands for Book Blogger Appreciation Week held once a year in September.  Every year they hold an awards ceremony in a whole bunch of categories for book bloggers where the community nominates bloggers for each category, the BBAW panel narrows down a shortlist based on nomination criteria they asked for and then the shortlist is put up for voting for a set amount of time.  The winners are announced during that appreciation week.

Bites wasn’t around last year for it and I wasn’t thinking all that much of it this year.  Yeah, I’m promoting it on my blog and I put in some nominations for certain categories and signed up for the interviews and whatever.  But I didn’t actually think I’d end up with anything.

Then I get an email yesterday from the awards panel congratulating me on my nomination for Best Speculative Fiction Blog!  At first I thought it was spam because I thought I signed in to my normal email and not my blog email.  But I read it, like, a million times and it said the same thing.  I’d been nominated.  Holy crap!

Now keep in mind I don’t really promote my blog.  It’s on a listing site and Book Blips and that’s pretty much it except for me commenting on other people’s blogs.  So for someone that doesn’t promote, to get enough people writing my name into a category is absolutely amazing!  So I got all of my nomination information together and sent it off.

And then I get another email this morning, again from the awards panel, congratulating me on my nomination . . . for a completely different category!  Best Humorous/Funniest Blog!  *squee*  Not only did people think of me for one category, but two!  I can’t believe it!  So now I have to get nomination information together and in by Friday night.  Eeeee!

I can’t believe it!  Now I’m all excited for the shortlist!

Editing and an Announcement

Well, Diamond Crier is worse off than I thought and how I’m yearning to edit Earth Shatterer because I know it’s not this bad.  But I shall not give up!  I refuse!  Not after all that I time I put in on the story.  I’ve already consigned to the fact that DC won’t be my first query book so I’m good with that.  I just need to keep toiling, is all.

Also, if you wait a little while, until later this evening Eastern Standard Time, I’ll be posting my first contest over at Bites (check the sidebar).  It’s about 5:15 right now.  I’m thinking I should definitely have it up by 8.  It involves Harry Potter and would probably mean a little more to the Americans than it would to anyone else (simply for content).  If you’re interested, check it out.

I Got Bite

biteOr I have a website that does.  I’ve decided to cross post all of my book reviews that I’ve done on here, and will do on here, over at a specific review blog of my evil conjuring making.  Bites is its name and chomping is its game.  I have a bit of a reputation for handing over rather . . . honest reviews so I decided to play that up.  For instance I don’t have a star rating.  I have a bite rating.  The little Scrat above is it.  It’s a different form of rating and it fits with the motif of the site.

Aside from free books (I’ve come to realize publishers love giving away ARCs to bloggers and free books rock), I’m really trying to connect with other book review sites.  I’m thinking forward here.  Now’s the time to do this because when I start getting published (positive thinking, people!), I’ll be able to go to these sites and ask nicely if theyd review my ARCs.  I can’t remember which agent gave that piece of advice but it was one of the good ones.  And it makes sense, right?  I think so.

So now I have my own book review site.  I’m excited, especially because I get to bite things.  Come on by and let me know what you think.  It’s going to take me a little while to copy all of the reviews from here over there but it shouldn’t be too bad.  Once that’s done it’ll be double posting.  Nice and simple.  I’ll have to expand my horizons on Bites a little bit but I think I have a little while (or, more correctly, I’m giving myself a little while) before I need to do that.
